In order for Architects to make a meaningful difference, we have to be creative, but we must be engaged in the political process and the community to help shape it. Get involved and stay involved.
I didn’t hear from anyone last month so I will ask the question again. What would it be like for Architects if AIA didn’t exist? Think about it. From the Strategic Council meeting came the idea to set up an “Ask an Architect” booth at the downtown market on Saturdays in the chain of Parks on Park Avenue. Kathryn Stivers volunteered to lead the effort and has been working with Allen Thompson of Tallahassee Downtown Experience. She has been able to secure a booth for us. Anyone interested in assisting and participating in this endeavor please email Kathryn at kstivers@think3d.net.
The purpose of the “Ask an Architect” booth is aimed at providing community service/outreach on the subject of the built environment.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY-VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
|
|
|
Another event that was initiated at the Strategic Council meeting was the Habitat For Humanity Build. Starting in August AIA Tallahassee will begin Volunteer Builds with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity to build homes for our community. Volunteer builds will be on Saturdays from 8am – 2pm. Volunteer build dates will be released mid-August and Volunteers will be able to choose dates convenient for them. If you would like to participate in this volunteer opportunity please contact LauraLee Diallo, ldiallo@dagarchitects.com.

T-SHIRT DESIGN COMPETITION

In effort to represent our AIA Component of Architects as we volunteer to build homes in our community, we would like to announce an open T-shirt Design Competition. These T-shirts would be worn during the Volunteer Builds with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity. Please submit ideas/ designs/ sketches to LauraLee Diallo, ldiallo@dagarchitects.com by July 24, 2018. The winning design will be announced August 7, 2018. |

AIA FILM CHALLENGE: A BLUEPRINT FOR BETTER
 The fourth annual Film Challenge invites architects and filmmakers to collaborate in telling stories of projects done in partnership with civic leaders and the community. The Film Challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate how architects are having a positive impact on our towns and cities by creating a Blueprint for Better. Architects are to create a 3 - 5 minute documentary style short showcasing how they use design to improve lives.
KEY DATES:
Registration opens: June 18
Submissions due: August 27
Winners announced: October 2018
- Grand prize winner receives $5,000 cash, travel and hotel accommodations for two in NYC
- Celebration and film screening at Architecture and Design Film Festival on October 16, 2018,
- Film distributed across multiple AIA channels and an Official film award seal

2018 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS
A total of 39 buildings have been nominated this year. Among AIA Tallahassee’s region are several buildings of note. The Care Point Health & Wellness Center by BKJ, Inc. Architects specializes in infectious disease management and serves as an access point for several other local community health care centers. CityChurch: The Move by Hoy Stark Hagan Architects, houses a contemporary space for worship services, a children’s ministry, a “care room” for therapy and support sessions and a café. The Tallahassee Community College Wakulla Environmental Institute in Crawfordville by Barnett Fronczak Barlowe & Shuler Architects was created to nurture economic development in rural North Florida by focusing on using the natural environment as an educational component.
The buildings nominated shape Florida’s topography and create a distinct architectural style for which Florida is known. The winner will be revealed on July 21 at the Honor and Design Awards at the Florida AIA Convention in Ponte Vedra, so be there! Please go to the following link and vote for your favorites.

COMPONENT CONNECT
What is AIA Component Connect? It is a new AIA web platform (started this year) designed to provide resources and information to AIA chapter leaders to help better run the chapter and serve its members. I’d like to share the Component Connect Calendar with you so you can take part in some of the webinars, especially if you are considering getting involved with AIA in a leadership capacity, which I highly encourage. SAFETY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (SAP) TRAINING
Monday, August 13, 2018 :: 8AM - 4PM
The Renaissance Center I 435 North Macomb Street
 AIA Tallahassee and City of Tallahassee Building Inspection will be hosting the SAP Training on August 13, 2018, from 8AM to 4PM in the Renaissance Center Second Floor Conference Room. The Renaissance Center is located at 435 North Macomb Street. See the information about the training. Registration cost is $110 per person.
Post-disaster Safety-Assessment Program (SAP) training provides architects, engineers, and building inspectors with the knowledge to provide evaluations of facilities and buildings in the aftermath of a disaster.

AIA (NATIONAL) CONFERENCE ON ARCHITECTURE
The AIA National Conference took place in the iconic city of New York on June 21-23. We had six members there from AIA Tallahassee!
Three new officers were elected and will serve you at the National level in 2019-2020.

AIA FLORIDA CONVENTION
The convention is right around the corner on July 19-22 at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa in Ponte Vedra, Florida. I hope quite a few of our members will be attending as it is so close to us and there are so many good classes. This year the theme is Innovate+. It is still not too late to register.
To date, AIA Tallahassee has 5 delegates voting at the convention. We can have up to 16. If you are going to the convention and are interested in being a delegate, please email Eve at eve.williamstwo@gmail.com and she will answer any questions you have and tell you more about it.
As a delegate, you will be voting for AIA Florida and AIA Florida/Caribbean officers and two proposed bylaw amendments.

FAPAC 50/50 CHALLENGE
The July 17th lunch and learn will be the last meeting to purchase tickets for our 50/50 FAPAC challenge. Don't forget to bring your cash or check to purchase your tickets.
For those who are attending either June or July’s AIA meeting, please don't forget to bring your cash or check to purchase tickets for our 50/50 challenge for FAPAC. FAPAC, Florida Architect's Political Action Committee, is the Advocacy arm of Florida AIA that raises the level of awareness of and champions architects in the political process. Without this group we would not have a "seat at the table" when dealing with issues like attempted changes to the CCNA, taxes on architectural services, statewide code changes, or the legislative review of architects' licensure requirements. Here’s how the challenge works:
You purchase a ticket for $2.00 and you have a chance to win half of the pot. The more tickets you purchase the higher your chances are to win. The drawing will be held at the July 17th meeting. The other half of the pot goes to FAPAC. The check from our local chapter, as well as other Florida chapters, will be presented to AIA Florida at the Florida Convention in Ponte Vedra (July 19-22). There is always competition to see which chapter can raise the most funds.

PRESENTATION ON TILE AND STONE
Tuesday, August 25, 2018 :: 4:30PM
We will have a special presentation on Tile and Stone Tuesday, August 25th at 4:30pm. The venue is MultiStone, located at 6668 Thomasville Rd, and are sponsoring the event. The presenter will be by Olivier Chamel AIA.
You will receive 1 hour CEU. There will be wine and cheese refreshments.
MultiStone performs fabrication and installation of Natural and Engineered stone countertops and products. So, stop by on your way home for a learning experience on tile and stone.
