This quote is important to me because we as Architects document the story of history through our buildings, hence the importance of preserving them. As I watch the demolition of some of Tallahassee’s historic buildings, it saddened me. Part of our story is being removed. This is another reason we, as architects, need to become part of the local and state decision makers.
I wanted to take a moment to think about Michael D. Lingerfelt, an Orlando based Architect who passed away last month. Michael was very involved in AIA, serving in leadership at all levels. He has projects all over the world and was a Walt Disney Imagineer. He served as the Architect of Record for billions of dollars of construction of Disney projects. Michael was also a trainer for the SAP classes in Florida. If you would like to read his obituary please go to the following link.

STRATEGIC PLANNING/PRESIDENT’S ADVISORY COUNCIL
- What do you want to accomplish in AIA Tallahassee this year?
- When you look around what do you consider we should be doing?
- What do YOU want to do?
We met last week to begin in earnest discussing these exact things and a lively discussion it was. Many thanks to those who came Tuesday evening, and thank you for stepping up, speaking out volunteering and contributing to what we can do, be and accomplish. For those thinking they may have missed out - you did - but not completely because you can still weigh is, assist and DO things to make this component what it can be - OUR AIA Tallahassee.
Did we talk about things that we have done before? Sure.
We always consider what we are doing at monthly component meetings, regular events we hold and Golf Tournaments (We had our BEST result of the Golf tournament this past April - Thank you, Iain!)
Architecture week in April was great - Did you design, build and/or vote for your doghouse this past April? If so thank you, if not you have another opportunity to do similarly next year with a Cat Condo (or something like that - it’s in the works - see why we need you?!)
Do you want to promote Architecture in Tallahassee? Design? Assist in helping our community know better what we do and the value we bring to planning, design construction and use of the facilities of our community - then plan on joining us again.
Tuesday we talked of “ask an Architect”, a lecture series, Lego events, Cat Condos, Conventions, Advocacy, Students, Architects, Community Leadership and a Booth we can set up to have a direct conversation with our City. There was more much more, but I’ll ask that you join us to better understand, and contribute as we explore and put into action things that will grow our component and, make our community better.

AIA FILM CHALLENGE: A BLUEPRINT FOR BETTER
The fourth annual Film Challenge invites architects and filmmakers to collaborate in telling stories of projects done in partnership with civic leaders and the community. The Film Challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate how architects are having a positive impact on our towns and cities by creating a Blueprint for Better. Architects are to create a 3 - 5 minute documentary style short showcasing how they use design to improve lives.
KEY DATES:
Registration opens: June 18
Submissions due: August 27
Winners announced: October 2018
- Grand prize winner receives $5,000 cash, travel and hotel accommodations for two in NYC
- Celebration and film screening at Architecture and Design Film Festival on October 16, 2018,
- Film distributed across multiple AIA channels and an Official film award seal

2018 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS
There were well over 20 projects submitted this year for the People’s Choice Award. Voting starts June 20, 2018 and goes through July 20 th. The winner will be revealed on July 21 at the Honor and Design Awards at the Florida AIA Convention in Ponte Vedra, so be there! “Dinner by Design”: A Networking Dinner Event
This unique networking event can serve as part of our mentorship program gearing each event to emerging professionals and young architects. It also promotes comradery amongst our members of the local AIA Tallahassee chapter. The next one will be held this summer.

COMPONENT CONNECT
What is AIA Component Connect? It is a new AIA web platform (started this year) designed to provide resources and information to AIA chapter leaders to help better run the chapter and serve its members. I’d like to share the Component Connect Calendar with you so you can take part in some of the webinars, especially if you are considering getting involved with AIA in a leadership capacity, which I highly encourage. AIA (NATIONAL) CONFERENCE ON ARCHITECTURE
The AIA National conference is right around the corner, being held in New York City, June 21-23. It’s not too late to go. The keynote speakers this year are Sir David Adjaye, Architect for the African American Museum in Washington DC and Sheela Søgaard who broke ground as a woman in architecture as the CEO of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). AIA FLORIDA CONVENTION
This year the theme is Innovate+. It will be held on July 19-22 at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Go to aiafla.org to read more about it and register. We have two of our own running for Florida AIA Board of Director positions for 2019. Patrick E. Hoy, who is presently Vice President, is running for President and JJ Scott, who is presently serving as Secretary/Treasurer is running for Vice President. 2018 ABC/AIA GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Golf Tournament was a huge success. The check presented to AIA Tallahassee was $9,015!! Thank you all who sponsored this event and a MONUMENTAL THANK YOU to Iain Harnden of MLD Architects for his leadership, coordination and time spent in organizing this event with ABC.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
It is very important to stay up with the issues that affect our profession. An update of the Legislative Issues has been places on the AIA Tallahassee website under Legislative Issues and Update. You will see a summary of the bill, the effective date and whether is died or passed.

FAPAC 50/50 CHALLENGE
For those who are attending either June or July’s AIA meeting, please don't forget to bring your cash or check to purchase tickets for our 50/50 challenge for FAPAC. FAPAC, Florida Architect's Political Action Committee, is the Advocacy arm of Florida AIA that raises the level of awareness of and champions architects in the political process. Without this group we would not have a "seat at the table" when dealing with issues like attempted changes to the CCNA, taxes on architectural services, statewide code changes, or the legislative review of architects' licensure requirements. Here’s how the challenge works:
You purchase a ticket for $2.00 and you have a chance to win half of the pot. The more tickets you purchase the higher your chances are to win. The drawing will be held at the July 17th meeting. The other half of the pot goes to FAPAC. The check from our local chapter, as well as other Florida chapters, will be presented to AIA Florida at the Florida Convention in Ponte Vedra (July 19-22). There is always competition to see which chapter can raise the most funds.
